Finding a Digital Organizer: Journler, Evernote or Together
For the longest time, Journler has been my killer app. It is my digital hub, my starting block, my central repository for everything on my Mac.
(I’ll save the ways in which I use Journler for a proper review post that will follow this one.)
My problem is not that Journler is no longer meeting my needs. It’s in that my workflow has hit a point where it is either:
- More complicated than when I first started using Journler.
- Better addressed by the functions of other apps.
For instance, I dump files associated with certain projects directly into Journler. If I need to share them with someone, I can email directly from Journler. I can also open them in their native app, edit them and have the changes show up in the stored copy in Journler.
But more and more I’m finding that I have several docs in Journler and several stored natively in my Finder. The line between what I store in Journler and what I store in Finder is starting to blur.
Too, other apps are starting to surpass Journler in some key ways, especially in the ability to sync across multiple computers or sync with my iphone.
For that reason, I’m testing two other apps that I’ve tried in the past.
The first, Together from Reinvented Software, I’ve tried before. I really liked it and wanted to use, but it had limitations that prevented me from making the switch.
The second app, Evernote, had much of what I needed — and far surpassed Journler and Together in the sync department, but I didn’t like its user interface or the way it handled certain information. Too, I didn’t like the limited kinds of documents you could store in it.
Over the next few days, I’m going to look at Journler, Together and Evernote. I’ll wrap things up with the app I choose as my digital organizer and why.
(And I’ve chosen not to look at Yojimbo, OmniOutliner, MacJournal or DEVONThink because I’ve tried all of these before and they do not meet my needs. That said, all are excellent apps that have a strong following.)
